LEARNING WITH COMPUTERS: A CONSTRUCTIVIST PERSPECTIVE

The latest phase in the history of educational has rejected the assumptions of Computers-Assisted Instructions (CAI) and computer literacy. The ways in which we use technologies in schools should change from their traditional roles as technology-as-teacher to technology-as-partner in the learning process. Before, I argued that’s student do not learn from technology, but that technologies can support meaning making by students. That will happen when students learn with technology. Students learn with technology when:

Ø      Computers support knowledge constructions

o        For representing learner’s ideas, understanding, and belief

o        For producing organized, multimedia knowledge base by learners

Ø      Computers support explorations

o        For accessing need information

o        For comparing perspective, beliefs and world views

Ø      Computers supports learning by doing

o        For simulating meaningful real-world problems, situation, and contexts

o        For represent belief, perspectives, arguments, and stories of others

o        For providing a safe, controllable problem space for student thinking

Ø      Computers support leaning by conversing

o        For collaborating with other

o        For discussion, arguing, and building consensus among members of a learning community

o        For supporting discourse among knowledge building communities

Ø      Computers are intellectual partner that support learning by reflecting

o        For help learners to articulate and represent what they know

o        For reflecting on what they have learned and how they come to know it

o        For supporting learners’ internal negotiations and meaning making

o        For constructing personal representations of meaning

o        For supporting mindful thinking based on Jonassen, Peck, and Wilson theory, 1999

As a conclusion, computers are “mind tools” for constructive learning and engaging critical thinking. The question is, based on the benefits using computers in teaching learning process, why certain teacher doesn’t use the computers in teaching learning process?
